Slovenian automation pioneer Professor France Bremšak 100th birth anniversary

This year marks the 100th anniversary of the birth of Professor France Bremšak, PhD. Prof. Bremšak is considered one of the pioneers and leading figures in the fields of systems theory, mathematical modeling, computer simulation, and automation control in Slovenia.

He began his career in 1952 at the Jožef Stefan Institute, where, as the head of electronics department, he laid the foundations that later evolved into all the current departments in the field of Electronics and Information Technologies at the Jožef Stefan Institute. In 1963, he became a regular employee at the Faculty of Electrical Engineering at University of Ljubljana, where he played a key role in the development of research and educational work in the broader field of automation.

Prof. Bremšak’s most significant achievement was the analog computer, which he and his colleagues developed between 1957 and 1959. The analog computer represented a top achievement on a European and global scale and was initially designed primarily for simulating processes in nuclear technology. Later, it was also used in other fields, serving as the basis for the development of mathematical modeling and simulation in Slovenia.

To commemorate Prof. Bremšak’s 100th anniversary, a memorial gathering was organized at the Faculty of Electrical Engineering in collaboration with the Jožef Stefan Institute.
